Morabeza Tobacco - Shadow of the Cherry

A group whose synergies radiate more from the studio than on the stage, Morabeza Tobacco is a Swedish lo-fi duo comprised of Vanilla Stillefors and Gustav Jennefors. Coming off their latest album “Shadow of the Cherry” released last November, recent effort “Saturnus” is a sly, disco-revivalist number. Underlined by the slap of its staccato bass lines and percussion flows, the track oozes with Vanilla’s silken glide as the track’s beat-driven sentiments are offset by the slowness of its placating tempo.  

If one where to compare previous tracks, its evident that Morabeza simply can’t be pinned down to a singular aesthetic. Surely there’s “Teachers in the Mood” a which analogously plays among its themes of lost connections and growing distant. Here with calm, sedating and dreamy notions, “Teachers in the Mood” permeates against the rusty grind of distant guitars and nostalgic memory. We also see on “Shadow of the Cherry” the anachronistic swash of textures that also features “Touch You” featuring the surfy chillwave frost of its delaying sustain and Italo-revival vocal gleam. To add to their diverse palate, “Temperature” flairs with punky riffs and falsetto-tipped sweetness that chirps along to beaming synths and euphoric feeling.

The AM: March 6, 2023

This week’s AM features a few happy returns, with new music from AM favourites Nabihah Iqbal, Mega Bog, and Benoit Pioulard (to name a few). Plus a throwback to classic mid-2000s chamber pop, violins played in the LA river, a David Axelrod track that’s technically credited to someone else, Morabeza Tobacco getting as close to the "Good Times" bassline as is legally allowed, and a healthy mix of atmospheric sounds, post-punk raves, experimental compositions and other offbeat easy listening for a Monday morning.

Stockholm, Sweden -- Last week, pop duo Morabeza Tobacco released their new album Shadow of the Cherry. The 10-track album is a sonic journey of the duo’s dreamy pop, with the energy swaying from more downtempo to spunky 80s-esque synth pop. The penultimate track on the record is “Saturnus,” a hazy track that spans nearly 5 minutes long. The vocals have a hypnotic lull to them and act more like gentle instrumental layer, enhancing the soft grooves of the track. It’s an introspective track that captures a quiet loneliness...guiding the listeners into another listen-through of the entire record.

Stockholm, Sweden -- As Morabeza Tobacco gears up to release their new album Shadow of the Cherry, the duo has been releasing a string of singles to give listeners an inside look into the record. Their newest single is “Touch You,” a dreamy pop song that spans just under 4 minutes long. The lush track blends glorious layers of synths and percussion that give the track a sheen of 80s pop. The groove of the bass with the sultry vocals add a depth to “Touch You” that’ll have listeners in a deep trance. Morabeza Tobacoo perfectly captures the feelings of yearning that keep us thinking about someone from our past.

Be still, my Men I Trust, Washed Out, Chromatics, Angelo Badalamenti, and Twin Peaks soundtrack loving heart. It has found ultimate gratification in Morabeza Tobacco, a Swedish duo who love to re-purpose cult TV shows into their music. Though their new song and video Ally McBeal has nothing to do with David Lynch’s Twin Peaks (or Ally McBeal), it carries the same hallmarks of its warped and heady music. Deceptively dulcet and sweet, Ally McBeal exudes dark ominous undertones in its decaying chillwave synths and distorted melody. “We’re not sure actually [where the name came from]”, the band says. “We were talking about what to name the song, then ‘Ally McBeal’ popped up and both of us thought ‘yeah, that’s the one’. One theory we have is that we associated it with one of the lines in the song (‘it’s no big deal’ =Ally McBeal).” In 2018, Morabeza Tobacco made waves with their single TTYL, which was even named by Pitchfork as one of their selections on their Top 100 Tracks of 2018.
